I have a confession to make. I never really watched the TV series 24. I know, I know – I’m sure I’m breaking some sort of Canadian Citizen Code because I failed to watch a series featuring Canadian-born actor Kiefer Sutherland, but there you have it. I decided to not immerse myself in the minute-by-minute drama of Agent Jack Bauer (who had a lot of really bad days), but would catch an episode or snippets here-and-there so I did have an idea as to what the show was about.
Then 24’s sixth season came along. Oh, I still didn’t become a regular viewer. But thanks to a friend, I was introduced to the wonderful recaps humour columnist Dave Barry was writing for his blog. They were (and are), I dare say, better than the real thing. With a definite tongue-in-cheek vibe, Dave took a program that could take its self a tad too seriously at times and turn it delightfully on its ear. Plot holes (when there was any semblance of a plot) were delightfully poked at and/or mocked, bad dialogue was tagged with the term Wooden Dialogue Generator (watch those splinters!), and the live updates/comments from Dave as he watched the show made it feel like you were watching the show without the pesky commercials.
But don’t merely take my word for it. Check out Dave Barry’s blog posts on the sixth season of 24 starting with the January 12, 2007 entry which you can find here.
What other TV shows have people writing recaps that are, in your opinion, better than the actual show?
