A Coffee, a Movie and a Requiem Friday

A Coffee, a Movie and a Requiem Friday

Life is not to be lived alone. We need one another for guidance, encouragement, correction, companionship, and even a light smack upside the head when we’re being ridiculous. And, I think, we also need others so we can share beautiful things that we see along the way.

Here are two beautiful things I encountered this week:

#1 - The Way is a film directed by Emilio Esteves starring his father, Martin Sheen.  It tells the story of a father who must go to collect the remains of his son who died shortly after beginning his journey on the Camino de Santiago. He decides to complete the journey for his son, and along the way meets people with their own stories to tell. Is truly is a beautiful film, from the cinematography to the soundtrack to the way it unfolds the stories of the travellers. If you can, see it on the big screen.

#2 - I was a little late to the party with the David Crowder*Band, their album Church Music being the first one I added to my collection after becoming hooked on their version of the song “How He Loves”. But it was still with sadness I heard their next album would be their last.

And after listening to their last studio album, I have to say the DC*B certainly knew how to wrap up their time together.

The album’s title – Give Us Rest or (a Requiem Mass in C [The Happiest of All Keys]) – is almost as long as the album itself. At 34 tracks it covers a range of pop, rock, techno, bluegrass and folk (and I may be missing a genre . . . or mixing some up!). Listened to in order each selection flow seamlessly into the next. It is a gorgeous album. Don’t take my word for it, though, or restrict yourself to listening to it via You Tube. Purchase the CD and give it a proper listen. (My current favourite is the foot stomping “I am a Seed”. And “Why Me?” (click link to hear a snippet on is one I can imagine Johnny Cash could have covered with ease.)
