A Coffee and a Wedding Friday
My niece is getting married on Saturday.
My niece. Married. Saturday.
The girl who gave her cat a bath with her strawberry-scented shampoo and had nary a scratch. The babe with big blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair, the toddler literally quivering with joy to have received a stuffy Bob the Tomato on her second birthday. The one with a quiet strength (sometimes stubbornness), an artistic touch, and a bohemian sparkle who is a joy to catch up with over coffee? The one with a mixture of practicality, “meh, it’ll work out”, and dreamer-do – yes, that one. She’s getting married on Saturday.
I’m having a bit of a time, at present, wrapping my head around this even as I’ve seen her try on dresses and attend bridal showers and share plans for the future. Granted, not nearly the time her mother and her father have, I’m sure. But as the path Jeff and I ended up on did not include children, we are (truly) so grateful and blessed (really, really) to have the relationships we do with both nieces and our nephew. So, in our own way, we’re grappling with the kids we’ve known and loved since their first days growing up and becoming adults and all those sorts of things.
It’s a wondrous thing to see, is it not? And I am so happy to be a part of the gathering together to celebrate the start of a new chapter – a new story, even – as my niece gets married this Saturday.
Happy Friday, eh?
