A Coffee and Some Soul Dusting Friday

A Coffee and Some Soul Dusting Friday

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.-Berthold Auerbach

Over the last week and a bit there has been a fair bit of things going to help dust up one’s soul beyond the everyday ups and downs. It’s during the dustier times in particular that I find myself reaching often for my iPod, looking for just the right grouping of songs. Here are some recent discoveries that have helped wash the dust off my soul in the past few days:

1. Wayfaring Stranger by Preson Phillips

It’s like a battle cry, this traditional American folk song (Wikipedia says it goes back to the 19th century) waking me up and encouraging to keep on going. I like the punch Phillips adds to it. (Plus, the dude has quite the beard. Google it.)

2. Waiting for My Time to Come by Colony House

The melodic and rhythmic structure of this song encapsulates the ups-and-downs of some seasons in life in particular, with its almost plaintive verses set against the peppier chorus and bridge. If this were on a mix tape, I’d soon be wearing out the tape. (Fun fact: The lead singer and drummer are the sons of CCM artist Steven Curtis Chapman. This may mean nothing to some of you. That’s okay.)

3. How Deep the Father’s Love For Us by Seeker & Servant

The small country church part of me still loves a good hymn – traditional and new – so I always enjoy finding songs like this that mix the structure of a traditional hymn with contemporary sounds. (Though I dare say one could rock out in the pipe organ quite effectively with this one, too.)

3. Marvelous Light by Ellie Holcomb

This whole song bubbles up with hope and joy, don’t you think? It does to my ears, and as with the above songs, has me eager to check out more work by this artist. (Ellie Holcomb is also part of the group Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, which is another talented group of singers and songwriters. As well, she is the Missus to Drew’s Mister.)

Happy Friday, everyone! Thank you for reading and for listening.

Day 2: Stillness: It's Ben a long week, and this morning, everyone slept in. Pookah included. I woke up and had a cup of coffee. In the quiet of the house. It was heaven. #31stories #vscocam #everydayeyecandy from Flickr via Wylio
