A Niece, Soon to Be Married
My niece is getting married on Saturday.
The girl who subsisted, nay, thrived on grilled cheese sandwiches, noodles, chicken fingers and fries. The babe with the deep belly laugh, the toddler still refusing to nap and with energy to spare who could, for a time at least, literally climb walls. The one with the soft heart (sometimes easily frustrated), a fierce loyalty, and a ready smile be it in person or texted emojis? The one with a mixture of adventure, homebody, and (I’d wager) a still-fierce rugby tackle – yes, that one. She’s getting married on Saturday.
Again, I’m having a bit of a time wrapping my head around this even as wedding showers have been celebrated, gifts bought and given, and a new household is being put together. And, also again, not nearly the time her parents have, of this I am sure. Yet Jeff and I still grapple in our way, even as we’re grateful to be a part of this young woman’s life. We love, love, love being an uncle and an aunt to three fantastic human beings. We may be a teensy bit biased, but we don’t care. We think they’re swell and it has been a privilege to watch them grow (and all outgrow me – not hard for them to do, mind you).
It’s one of life’s miracles, is it not, to see two people join together and to start a new story together? I’m so glad to be a part of the celebration along with my favourite guy as our niece gets married on Saturday.
