Jeff and I are big fans of the Relevant Podcast. Eagerly we await Download Day (normally a Friday), wondering if perhaps we should go a mini road trip so we can listen to the often hour-plus long show in one fell swoop rather than breaking it up over the course of a weekend. You should check it out if you enjoy hearing/talking about things pertaining to faith, culture, and interesting/odd news stories. It was via the podcast that we also, for the first time, encountered someone who hates the fall season. Like, could set a pile of raked-up leaves on fire that had been drenched in a pumpkin spice-flavoured beverage in a snap if they suddenly developed pyrokinesis* a là Drew Barrymore in Firestarter. (*Fun Fact: Word wants to auto-correct “pyrokinesis” to “perkiness”. I guess such a skill is sort of perky …)
And I was all, “Wha-?” because I love the fall season. If forced to pick, I would even say it is my favourite time of the year. Here’s why it’s a great time of the year – at least in my neck of the woods:
- The weather: We still have plenty of warm, sunny days but without the (can be) stifling heat of summer. During the day there is often a mellow warmth to the air, followed by a cooling crispness in the evening. Perfect for curling up with a book and a snuggly cat.
- The fancy beverages: Thank you to whomever it was who first encouraged me to try a pumpkin spice latte (and to do so half-sweet at Starbucks). Oh my stars – it’s like a happy fall-themed party in my mouth. (But if you want a truly good pumpkin-themed latte, go to Good Earth Café and Bakery for their pumpkin pie latte. Creamy, a perfect hint of spice, and with the right barista you’ll get it in a ceramic mug without having to ask.)
- The clothes: Cardigans or cute hoodies are the best, you guys. No, really. And cute boots with a snazzy pair of jeans and a funky long-sleeved shirt. And jackets. So many jackets ... Plus, one can enjoy the aforementioned book and snuggly cat in a cozy pair of sweats or with an afghan on particularly crisp evenings at home.
- The colours: This can be a bit tricky, yes, once all the leaves have changed from various shades of green to hues of yellow, red, and orange to, well, brown. But even then, house lights and street lamps add a golden glow to dark or gray skies.
What about you? What do you like about the fall season? Or do you agree with the Relevant Podcast member who thinks it is The Worst Season Ever?
