When I was in school, I found more often than not I could focus better on my homework when I had music playing in the background. I can still remember one night I was spending at my grandma’s house with both my sisters while our parents were away, stretched out on one of the single beds in the room I shared with my younger sister. After trying to get whatever work I was doing completed, I finally relented on turned on the radio – not too loud, not too quiet – and was then able to focus on the task at hand.
I find having some sort of white noise, I suppose it is called, helps me to get various jobs done. For instance:
- When I’m cleaning the house, listening to a podcast helps me to check a few more items off my “To Do” list.
- This month, when I’ve hit a sticky spot with my NaNoWriMo story I’ve found a good instrumental mix (usually classical) via Songza or (interestingly enough) some Coldplay tunes help me to get the words flowing once again.
- I don’t know if I can run without music. Seriously. I have run once without music in the last few years, and it felt like The Run That Would Never End. I make sure my playlist has at least two or three songs that never fail to help me pick up the pace when necessary. (The Futurekind from Doctor Who’s season 3 soundtrack is one of those songs.)
