A Coffee and Dream Confidantes Friday

A Coffee and Dream Confidantes Friday

Day-2-Plans-by-Simon-James.jpg

Sometimes I wonder if dreams/goals/plans are trickier to navigate for people of faith as they have the extra question to answer of, “Is this God’s will for my life?” because our desires are not always to be trusted, and our plans can take us down unprofitable paths. As I was saying to Jeff last night when talking about a dream I have, “I can spend another year in the loop of asking that question, too.” He looked at me somewhat askance, having been down this rabbit trail with me numerous times, before saying, “But you’ve kept coming back to this. You’re not like me with some things where it’s all, ‘Oooh – shiny!’ for three weeks before moving onto the next thing.” And he’s right. That’s one thing I like about talking with Jeff – he can take a step back to take in a bigger picture perspective, in this case to look back at how long I’ve dreamt of and questioned whether or not my wanting to do a particular thing has God’s seal of approval on it. Me, I can get too caught up in what is immediately in front of my face. Can’t see past my nose and all that sort of thing.

It’s something I’m coming, at last, to realize about making changes in life whether it be changing eating habits or careers or hairstyles: You need to have the right confidantes. They cannot – and should not – be those who never, ever question or probe more deeply into what you’re wanting to do. Pushback is often needed to help fine-tune things, to help get you on the best path to reach your destination. At the same time, though, sometimes the wrong person can stall things out; it’s not even done out of any sort of maliciousness – they’re often acting with the best of intentions. But we’ve all received advice or opinions that have brought things to a standstill, sometimes only for a time and sometimes on a permanent basis. Sometimes we’ve even been the ones proffering such advice of opinions to another.

All that to say, be careful when it comes to sharing your dreams and your goals. Well-intentioned advice can kill a good dream or give life to a bad one.

Have a happy Friday, everyone.
