A Coffee and Some Bits & Pieces Friday

A Coffee and Some Bits & Pieces Friday

It’s amazing the difference a few days and many tumbled-out prayers can make. On Tuesday I shared a bit here about some mistakes I made at work. And it can be tempting in such situations to play the Blame Game: “If so-and-so hadn’t done such-and-such …” and all that sort of a thing. But that doesn’t get one properly ahead, and thankfully I realized that in this situation. It was like Olan Rogers in The Comeback Kid. Okay, well, not quite. But I did feel somewhat glorious after yesterday’s performance review at said job. Because I had prayed beforehand, had realized I did indeed need to work on a few things and as such, went into things on pretty much the same page as my boss. And we had a good talk about a couple of things in the process. It may have been the best performance review in terms of actual dialogue I’ve had with my boss to date.

I’ve heard/read the word ‘hustle” (and words related to it) a lot over the last few years as I aim to move my writing out of the hobby zone in fits and starts. So much, it seems, it’s starting to sound like white noise. Now hustling in the “work hard and energetically” sense isn’t a bad thing. Particularly for one like me who can have too much of a tendency to kick back and save things for “tomorrow”. But at the same time, I’m finding the word is starting to chafe at me a bit.

As such, I eagerly clicked on Andi Cumbo-Floyd’s piece where she speaks about how she, too, is tired of how the word hustle makes her feel. She’s trading hustle for diligence and you know what? So am I. I need to move out of a “fits and starts” mentality and into a diligent one.

Tying neatly into Andi’s thoughts on hustle and diligence were Shawn Smucker’s words on what we do with the intruders in our heads, in our thoughts (which in turn tied in with a sermon I heard on Sunday). This is no big surprise to those who know me, but I too often give the most attention to the loudly negative voices crossing the threshold. I’m learning, though, to show them the door before my ears start to ring with their gnashing words.

Happy Friday, all! I’d really like to share a couple more bits & pieces with you, but it’s time to get ready for work. (Speaking of diligence in writing, I do need to get back on a better blogging schedule …)
