A Coffee and Some Book Progress Friday

A Coffee and Some Book Progress Friday

This post, much like Ze Book, was wanting to get bogged down. It almost felt like physically slogging through syrupy-wet mud, every step a fight that threatened to steal my footwear along with my footing. And in the case of today's post it was threatening to steal a plain-and-simple update with pretty prose and velveteen vagueness.

Ugh.

Thankfully, the mist cleared away after some time away from the keyboard and a good night's sleep. And here I sit, trying to stick to the unvarnished fact of the matter: I have not made a lot of progress on Ze Book. There is no outline, no great cast of characters or conflict to be overcome. It seemed whenever I did sit down to work on it, every possible idea fled, swift and silent, leaving me stressed and frustrated.

Until, finally, I gave it a rest. I worked on another story. I did some research in a bid to determine a genre for Ze Book (because General - Cool Concept is not an option). I watched a spy movie or two, looked for good stories be they in songs, books, or screens big and small. And then, post-vacation, I found myself at work with some Simon & Garfunkel tunes playing in the background and thinking of a line one character could say to another. A day or two later, a scene cropped up in my mind's eye for another. And things began to settle into a genre - something fun, a bit tongue-in-cheek even. Because in the time since this story idea first cropped up during a NaNoWriMo sprint to the finish a few years ago, it has never gone irretrievably dormant. But trying to cram it in with a fair number of other things pre-vacation was not helping anything - other than a big ball of frustration - take shape.

In a nutshell, Ze Book is in the early stages. At last. I'm finding its shape and pacing. Not that I'm eschewing deadlines and outlines - no! But I'm needing to gather the materials needed to build a story out of as a general idea about coffeehouse spies simply did not cut it.

So there you go. :) Happy Friday everyone!
