A Coffee and Some Books Friday
“What on earth could be more luxurious than a sofa, a book, and a cup of coffee?” -Anthony Trollope
Anthony Trollope was a wise man (at least in regards to the above quote as I know nothing about him otherwise). I myself have enjoyed many a moment curled up on one of our couches with a fresh cup of coffee and a good book.
Here are four books in varying stages of completion you might also enjoy in a comfy spot with a favourite beverage:
Nonsense Novels by Stephen Leacock: The blurb on the back cover with its promise of send-ups of the detective story, the adventure story, and the shipwreck story (to name but a few) pulled me in. A quick flip through the middle finalized my decision to buy this book. And the first two stories confirmed it was the right choice. It’s a perfect book to read before bed or during a lunch break.
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan: It took me awhile to make my way through this book, not because it was a heavy or a hard read. No, I had too many books on the go (again) and as such had tucked this one away for a little while. I recently finished it, and I loved this geeky tale of secret societies, dusty tomes, and friendship.
Behind the Sofa: Celebrity Memories of Doctor Who edited by Steve Berry: This book involved Doctor Who, so my purchase of it was a bit of a no-brainer. I enjoy reading and hearing stories from fellow fans of the show you either get into or you don’t – there’s no middle ground, it seems, when it comes to the Doctor. And a quick perusal of a couple of the pieces offered some fun behind-the-scenes facts, which I always enjoy. I look forward to delving into this one shortly.
Confessions of the World’s Best Father by Dave Engledow: I first came across Dave Engledow’s creative photographs of himself and daughter Alice Bee via Facebook. His photos are a wonderful, often tongue-in-cheek chronicle of the twists and turns of parenthood. I have enjoyed every one of his photos I have seen so far, and I’m not even a parent y’all.
Happy Friday (and happy reading)!
