A Coffee and Some Differing Graces Friday

A Coffee and Some Differing Graces Friday

+ from Flickr via Wylio I do believe I’ve shared the story here before of how I tried to be chameleon-like in my younger years, trying to blend/fit in with whatever group I was with and wanted to belong to and be a part of. At the time, I took a degree of pride in striving to be that way. But, as you can well imagine I’m sure, it was also tiring to do for long. And it left me—for quite a time after—wondering who I was without all the various pieces of camouflage gear I’d worn day after day after day.

The thing is, God’s not in the duplication business when it comes to so many things: Take snowflakes, sunsets, seasons, and, yes, people, to name but a few things. As such, it has been an adventure I (honestly) have not always necessarily appreciated to learn of all the ways in which I differ from others and in which others differ from me. Somehow I had come to equate “different” with “bad”. Blending in was better – don’t disagree or stand out in any way! But again – it was also tiring in a “I just feel “draggy” and I don’t know why” kind of a way.

But, also again—that is not by God’s design. And I was reminded of that earlier this week when I read the following verse:

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them … -Romans 12:6a (ESV)

My brain was all, “Wait – what?! We’re made different by God’s grace?”

Again: I long equated “different” with “bad”, particularly when it came to me in regards to others. So the above verse grabbing my thoughts like that, well – it is a still-unfolding wonderment of a thought, of an idea.

We have different gifts, all of us. And why? Because of the grace God has given to us.

“Different” does not equal “bad”. “Different” equals “grace”. Different is good. We need each other’s differences. We need each other to be as God made us to be. Not as we’re trying to make ourselves over to be, but as God has designed us to be.

Because God looked at all He had made, and has made, and calls it “good”. And that makes for something good to chew on this Friday and beyond, don’t you think?
