A Coffee and Some Good Reminders Friday

A Coffee and Some Good Reminders Friday

Ugh. This week I saw too much that wasn’t good in one way or another:

  • The many mistakes made by the Church – past and present – were pointed out, with some even calling for her to basically just give up already, to just die. (Even though Jesus builds His Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matt. 16:18).)
  • The equivalent of a Salem-era witch hunt unfolded in one corner of the Twitterverse as someone was accused wrongly and repeatedly of being a thief (and that was one of the few nice ways in was put).
  • There were more deaths, slander, innocent victims, government mismanagement, and so on and so forth reported in various media outlets.
  • Daily reminders came of my own sins, my own failures and shortcomings.

Yet even in the midst of all that, when I kept my eyes, ears, and heart open, there were glimpses of grace, moments of mercy to be found:

  • A dad who lost his own son to cancer helps other kids get to their chemo appointments in a clean, safe, and timely manner.
  • It’s an older post, yes, but that does not negate the Church is not at death’s door. Jessica Buttram “. . . saw the church the way God meant for her to be . . . “ and I think you’ll agree she can indeed be glorious.
  • Emily T. Wierenga reminds us of the grace none of us deserve in “A Letter to Dr. Gosnell on Mother’s Day” (have some tissues handy).
  • Improv Everywhere set up a fake “walk and text” service in New York City recently, and I was left laughing and wondering if such a thing would not actually be a good thing. ;-)
  • David Crowder*Band’s “finale” album Give Us Rest Or (A Requiem Mass In C {The Happiest of All Keys]) has been popping up regularly when I’m shuffling through songs on iTunes, and I’m still amazed at what a fantastic collection it is. Oh My God is weaving its self into my own prayers as of late:

I hope you have also encountered things that have done your spirit and soul good things week. Happy Friday!
