A Coffee and Some Links Friday

Something to read and enough coffee from Flickr via Wylio The clock’s a-ticking and as such I’m going to dive right in with some things I’m reading or have read and am pondering:

  • I can trip down the negative path too fluidly and easily still for my tastes, whether it is in regards to myself, to others, or whatever set of circumstances. And really, in the grand scheme of things, what do I have to complain about? All the same, while I haven’t attached a monetary worth to my negative words, Bob Goff’s piece on the Storyline blog on the cost of negative words should probably be read by me daily. Because it was only yesterday when I encountered those types of words in my mouth yet again.
  • It was a while ago I read Shauna Niequist’s piece on narrowing focus, and there are good things I need to take away and work into this life.
  • Now, there are those of us who don’t do great in groups or who are all that great at small talk, so as soon as I came across this article on how to Work a Room When You’d Rather Walk Out of It, and, well, I had to read it. And I’m glad I did – there’s good advice here on how to make the whole experience less daunting.
  • I’m nearing the end of Louise Penny’s book Dead Cold, and I continue to love the character of Inspector Armand Gamache and many of the residents of the fictional Quebec town of Three Pines. Penny knows how to weave a good mystery with fleshed-out characters, and the mysterious Arnot case, which continues to haunt Gamache, was given much more than a whispered reference. I’m probably buying the next book in the series this weekend.

I hope you have some good things you’re reading. And remember, check out Preemptive Love and Samaritan’s Purse on ways you can help Iraqi women and girls in particular escape the horrors of ISIS. Samaritan’s Purse and charity:water also have “boots on the ground” helping with the ongoing disaster relief in Nepal, as do World Vision. We’ve been given a lot here in North America – let’s not bury it in the ground.

Have a good Friday, all.
