A Coffee and Some Prioritizing Friday

A Coffee and Some Prioritizing Friday

Comfort food.Comfortable clothing. Comfortable chairs. Comfortable beds. Comfortable pillows.

I like comfort—which is probably why I’ve been struggling with all the changes I rolled right into at the start of this year. And, as I’m sure many of us do, I started to think I had bit off more than I could ever possibly chew. Perhaps I was even out of God’s will with all I had decided to take on. (Note: I often feel I have no clue what God wants to me to do outside of the usual things … Usually up until the point there’s something I don’t want to do.) So I’ve sat, and hemmed and hawed, and procrastinated quite spectacularly on certain things. Still am as of this writing, in fact.

And then, night before last, I was reminded of how God isn’t concerned so much with my comfort as He is with my obedience to His calling. Not only that, He’s not one who necessarily gives anywhere near an annotated list along with said callings, either. No, He’ll often offer instructions like this:

“Go up to the mountain and bring wood and rebuild the house …” -Haggai 1:7a (MEV)

These instructions were offered to the people of Israel who had, post-captivity, taken to focusing more on building their own homes than rebuilding the Temple. Because building the Temple was hard. And there was much in the way of opposition. So the Israelites did what I often do when facing big, hard things: They changed and did something easier, lighter, a bit more fun.

And God, patiently, is reminding me I need to do the work before me. The reading. The writing. Being an active part of a community, of a group, of my church. I need to go up the mountain before me, get some building supplies, and then get back down the mountain and start building. As one of my pastors said this week: “You have to do what God showed you first before He shows you what to do next.”

Ooooo. This is going to be challenging. But – and I have to remember this – it will be worth it.

Have a happy Friday, all - challenges and all!
