Back in the Groove?
I did not plan to be away from here for so long. I had thought as November and another National Novel Writing Month challenge dawned I would still be posting here once or twice a week. I could provide some updates on my NaNoWriMo progress, or write about non-NaNoWriMo things, or do a mishmash of the two. But then I hunkered down with what I had hoped would be a reboot of The Secret Lives of Baristas and found myself fighting for every word transcribed for that story. Then as numerous restarts and “start in the middles” filled my Word document, I found myself without much to say once the day’s writing was done. Eventually, my NaNoWriMo Word document turned into a collection of vignettes of whatever was on my mind for that particular day. The goal was to keep writing about whatever as plot and characters and story eventually became moot. I simply had to cross the 50,000-word mark. And I did—a week early, in fact.
It was a relief to be done NaNoWriMo this year, and at this point I don’t know whether or not I’ll do it again next year. Time will tell, I suppose. But as such, I found myself anything but eager to jump back into blogging when I was done this year. Simply put, I felt I had nothing to say, and even now I wonder what to do here going forward. Do I continue with the “slice of life” pieces? Do I shut down the blog? Do I find a new direction altogether to go in? I genuinely don’t know that even as I do know I will keep writing.
I am realizing, however, I do need to find a better balance between blogging and telling stories and reading and building a life off the page so I have something to put on the page. Because I cannot keep up my November levels of writing, for I am also relishing having things like reading and just hanging out with my husband and exercising higher on the priority list again.
So there are decisions to be made in the not-too-distant future. I do hope you’ll continue to be patient with me as I sort some things out.
Some music for contemplation (as you do ... well, as I do):
