getting started.

getting started.

I don’t know about you, but when someone who knows you well comments on a change they’ve noticed in you it’s an encouragement that settles deep in your soul. Take a recent conversation in the church foyer between my mom, a mutual friend, and myself. The particulars of what we talked about escape me at present, but over the course of our chat my mom commented on my tendency to look on the cloudy side of life. To which I replied I was working on it. And my mom agreed I was getting better. My mom is a wonderful woman, y’all, but she tends to not sugarcoat things. So when she says she notices a positive change? Well, it means there is a positive change.

Huzzah!

And here’s the thing: Working to have a more balanced view of myself is helping me pursue some long dreamed-of/longed-for things in this life. Because I’m no longer talking myself out of it before I can start. And when it does start to feel overwhelming, I can take a step back, take a breath, and reach out to others for help to keep going.

Another thing that helps me to press on through certain things is music. And in light of the recent new things I’m working on, I decided to put together a playlist on Spotify to help me press through anxious/’ack!’ spots as they pop up. Titled “you’ve got this.”, it contains songs that I find give me some ‘oomph’ to keep on keeping on. Here are five of the 13 tracks and a bit on why it’s on this particular playlist:

I Have Confidence – Julie Andrews: This selection from The Sound of Music soundtrack was an obvious choice not only due to the song’s title, but also due to lines like “I am seeking the courage I lack” and “While I show them I’ll show me”. Plus Julie Andrews ah-may-zing.

Humanism – Jon Batiste & Stay Human: The theme song for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is a great jazz/funk/rock tune that is great for putting a pep in your step. I find myself hard-pressed to listen to it and not move in some way. (The version I have from “The Late Show – EP” is a bit faster than the one linked to here.)

Shadow Step – Hillsong United: Just the opening lines alone are enough to remind me I don’t have to muddle through this on my own: “Move me like You do the mountains/ Move me like You do the wind.” (Whew!)

Don’t Let It Break Your Heart – Coldplay: For a while now this has been a song I’ve found encouragement in, where I’m reminded even when I miss the mark, all is not lost. Plus it makes me think of the part in the book of Proverbs where Wisdom is said to be calling out – to me, this is a song she could be singing.

Awakening – Switchfoot: One, the video for this song is fun. Two, it’s a rocking reminder to wake up and live today and make your dream a reality (no matter if you’re a ‘desperate youth’ or a middle-aged person traversing new roads).

What song(s) do you go to when you need some pep in your step? (Share below, or on Facebook or Twitter  - I’m always on the lookout for new tunes.)
