How Shared Dreams Help Us Live Out Our Own

How Shared Dreams Help Us Live Out Our Own

At first it seemed odd to have the following string of words from Andi Cumbo’s book God’s Whisper Manifesto: The Makings of a Dream be the ones to start wrapping themselves around my heart: “For 15 years, I have dreamed of having a place with home and land where . . . food is treasured but not worshipped. Where animals are amazing but not treated like humans.”

But they did. And upon some reflection, I think I know why.

They speak of balance.

And it’s a balance Andi maintains throughout the book, that tension between dreaming and doing, joy and sorrow, hope and disappointment, healing and hurt. Because life is made up of those threads and so many more, isn’t it?

This book isn’t merely about Andi’s dream, however – about providing a place and building a community for people to share stories, lives, and to find rest for their souls. It also provides encouragement for others to keep tending to their own dreams, to not walk away from the patch of ground with their name stamped all over it because it appears dead or frustratingly dormant. For the following principles guiding God’s Whisper Farm as it is cleared, cultivated, and cared for can help us in growing our own dreams, too:

-       Love people first and hard – because sometimes love is hard. -       Live as green as possible without being stupid – because God called us to steward this spinning ball on which we live along with the dreams He has planted in each of our hearts. -       Live with intention but without pretention – because we can all stand to try new things and “. . . hold our minds cracked open. We know we can be wrong . . .” -       Art matters – because we are telling stories with our lives, even when we think no one is watching. -       Play is good, and rest is treasured – because both are good for the soul. -       Sharing the table – because “There’s something about a meal that lets us be more open.” -       Comfort is king (or queen) – because we all need a safe place to rest. -       Story is paramount – because everyone wants to be heard. -       To help and to hold – because “. . . we heal when we help.” -       Dream bigger – because God. Is. Big. (And faithful.)

Thank you, Andi, for sharing your story. For dreaming big, and not giving up, and not turning out God’s whispers to your heart and your soul.
