lost boy (little known)

lost boy (little known)

somehow i knew i did not actually know you(nor you me) beyond passings in hallways and classroom interactions as we learned ABCs and algebra (more or less for some of us, but not you) and tried to figure out what lay beyond sanctuaries of certain pecking orders and waxed linoleum

but i remember even ten years after mortarboards were flung and distances widened returning wanting to impress

(even though we knew only in passing one another) (even after learning ABCs and (me) struggling through formulas and numbers you whizzed through with barely a shrug) (so it seemed)

some (it pains me to say this because … it’s awkward, still) infatuations linger (though when i met the one who still makes me laugh and who has weathered storms with me that spark i carefully carried for so long had been out for what felt like a long time)

and perhaps the memory of that spark that innocence once held and lost is what left me, quiet when seconds before i was laughing with the one i love (i know him and he knows me)

and your struggles only revealed a breath of time ago are now at an end

those who knew you (and you knew) mourn, struggle, miss … …. wonder

because there is never enough time never a good time to lose someone known (even as some pains were cloaked even in a small town)

so memories remain amongst family friends those seen (and a little bit known) in passing (because a little bit known can still be a lot missed)
