One Thing (But Probably More Than One)

One Thing (But Probably More Than One)

I have this bad habit. (And it’s not my only one, but it’s getting late on a Monday night as I write this and I want to sleep. And have a cookie.) Country Roads, Take Me (Far From) Home from Flickr via Wylio

I like to look for/analyze the “whys” behind certain things I do – usually the dumb things, the bad habits. While this can be good for stories or blog topics or the occasional journal entry, it’s not so great for helping me change things. Not that I’m saying figuring out motives or finding root causes behind something is a bad thing. But too much of any one thing tends to be, well, bad, doesn’t it?

Too much analyzing of a bad habit is not helping me pick up a new habit. And I’ve heard this more than once: Overcome a bad habit by replacing it with the good. Don’t fixate on not doing the bad habit. Focus instead on the new habit you want to adopt.

Want to eat healthier? Don’t fixate on all the junk food you shouldn’t be eating. Focus on finding good foods you can and should be eating.

Want to have better relationships? Don’t fixate on all you’ve done wrong (or on what the other person has done wrong). Focus instead on the good things you can be doing, focus on the good the other person has done and is doing.

Want to make a career change? Don’t fixate on all the ways you don’t have time or don’t have XYZ skills. Focus on making use of the free moments you do have, of building upon the skills you already possess.

See? I know on some level this is a good way to help bring about some positive changes in this life, in this heart. However I still find myself too often fixating on the wrong thing, and getting bogged down in past regrets and futures that cannot be. Not that I get it wrong all the time, but I’ve been reminded I’m not where I want to be – where I hope to be and where I can be – with certain things yet.

Just a bit of a ramble today. Hope you don’t mind.
