A returning

A returning

It was a bit of a wrestle, what to undertake for this year’s NaNoWriMo project. After all, one of the two T-shirts I ordered is already on its way to my mailbox so it’s not like I can just decide to withdraw from the challenge. Well, I could, but the T-shirts have a pretty solid track record when it comes to motivating me to cross the 50,000-words line.

I initially considered revisiting an old story – say, the world of The Plot Ninjas where all kinds of silliness abounded and a lot of fun was had. But I had tried that once or twice in the years since that tale was typed, and it didn’t have the same sparkle as it had that initial year. Though that’s not to say the frivolity could not be found this year.

But what about doing something brand-spanking new? Get a new group of characters together and see what happens when they get together. But who? What? My fiction muscles haven’t been stretched too much as of late. It’s like someone yells out “Make up a story!” and like one of those fainting goats I stiffen up and topple right over until the threat passes.

And then. Then there is the story idea that will not quit. Seriously. I’ve tried all kinds of ways to politely show it the door, to let it know it’s not them, it’s me … but it refuses to take the hint. I’ve tried plotting, sitting down and writing whatever comes to mind, coaching, a few NaNoWriMos … and still it persists. There is something about the idea that has me considering, yet again, ________? Could this be the year I finally find the right way into that world?

All I know for sure is for an idea to not quit after this length of time,  that something has to be there to be discovered. So here is to another year in NaNo Land with ______________.

(Hey, I know you may be wondering what is going on with the ___________. Here’s the thing: I’ve prattled on about this idea a lot, and am hoping this November to approach it with a cleaner slate. At the same time, I need some accountability, so this me trying to give the idea a fresh start while still providing the accountability I need to see it through.)
